About Us

VAANI, Deaf Children’s Foundation is a non-government organisation (NGO) working to empower deaf Indian children and their families. We were registered as a Trust in 2005 (Registration Number 4257).

VAANI means ‘eloquent in words, sound’. We believe that VAANI, Deaf Children’s Foundation stands for ‘sound of the soul’, and exists as a platform for deaf children and their families to make themselves heard.

Our role is that of a catalyst. Rather than delivering accessible grassroots-level services ourselves, we work with local organisations at the grass-roots level to:

  • support the development of such services
  • collaborate with concerned families, communities, other organisations and government authorities to develop sustainable strategies for these services across the country
  • empower families so that they can be more involved in the lives of their deaf children

We were earlier known as IDCS-India (International Deaf Children’s Society – India). In June 2008, in keeping with our aim of working with deaf children and their families in India, IDCS-India has shed its ‘international funding organisation’ image. We are now ‘VAANI, Deaf Children’s Foundation’, with an Indian name that goes with our new ‘national’ image and truly represents what we stand for.
