The flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority* (ASDMA) issued on the evening of 15 August, 2017 stated that about 33.3 lakh people in 3,186 villages/localities were affected by the deluge. In many places, river embankments gave way, affecting humans, cattle and crop alike.

Despite these numbers, there is no news on how many deaf children are affected by flood in Assam.

It is a known fact that human trafficking peaks during disasters, wartime and conflict. The most vulnerable group during those times are children. The vulnerability is amplified exponentially when the child has a hearing disability. For instance, a deaf child may never be able to speak about his/her ordeals to social workers or law enforcement authorities.

Vaani is responding to Assam floods: In Kamrup (Guwahati), Nagoan and Nalbari and Sonitpur. Our team is supporting the affected communities through relief material and helping deaf children from flooded areas to reach safer locations.
