A series of training programmes were held in July in Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram for upgrading the skills of parents and CBR workers who work with deaf children. A heartening development was the active participation of parents in all these programmes.
West Bengal Projects - July 2010
A parents’ feedback session, classes to teach ISL, screening camps for deaf children and regular educational intervention at our resource centres were just some of the activities in July in VAANI’s KMP. At PPKS in Pandua, the VAANI team reviewed the impact of the training imparted during the month on parents, their deaf children and teachers.

A teachers’ training workshop on emotional and social needs of deaf children and their families was conducted on April 8, 2010 at the School and Centre for Hearing Handicapped Children (SCHHC) Shillong, Meghalaya for 35 professionals.

A workshop on emotional and social needs of deaf children and their families was conducted on April 8, 2010 for family members at the School and Centre for Hearing Handicapped Children (SCHHC) in Shillong, Meghalaya. 38 family members of children who attend SCHHC participated in this programme.
Family Day in Kolkata
VAANI hosted a Family Day on 6th February 2010 for around 66 deaf children and their families in Kolkata.The 160 participants for this Family day came from JEM Kinder Garten
School, Pandua Pratibandhi Kalyan Samity, Anwesha,The Oral School For
The Deaf Children and Care and Counselling Centre. We also had four
young deaf adults helping with the conducting of the event and mingling
with the guests. All the participants enjoyed the day thoroughly.
Fundraiser in Kolkata

A glittering fundraiser was held on 22nd December at the Taj Bengal in Kolkata in aid of VAANI, Deaf Children’s Foundation. A number of Indian and Sri Lankan players turned up at the party where cricket memorabilia was auctioned among the invited guests who responded enthusiastically.

Evening for a cause in Guwahati

To raise financial support for its activities, VAANI organised an “Evening for a cause’ in Guwahati on December 11, 2009 at the Gymkhana Club. Over 250 people attended the very successful party which started off with music by the young band Voodoo Child. VAANI staff made a brief presentation on deafness, what a deaf child goes through and VAANI’s activities which are aimed at improving communication with deaf children.
Fundraisers
VAANI will be conducting two fund-raiser events in December in Guwahati and Kolkata. We are looking forward to a great response and hope to garner adequate support for all our work in the coming year.

World Deaf Week 2009 Press Coverage
Three prominent newspapers in Assam carried articles about VAANI and the work we do with deaf children and their families during World Deaf Week 2009.
World Deaf Week 2009
The last week in September from 24th Sept. to 30th Sept is traditionally celebrated as World Deaf Week . Posters were put up in some prominent stores including Fabindia and Tanz in Guwahati and Reynolds and Kathleens in Kolkata during the week. Bookmarks stressing on the importance of communication for young deaf children were distributed during the week. The response from Sarala Birla School, where the VAANI team had earlier conducted an awareness programme, was heartening.

A VAANI team visited Sarala Birla School, Guwahati for an awareness programme on deafness for a group of 25 students who wish to start a club working on issues around deafness.

Awareness programme for Vodafone
The VAANI team was invited to make a presentation to the marketing team of Vodafone Kolkata, on 31 July 2009. The presentation also aimed to sensitise the Vodafone team members on issues that surround childhood deafness.

A team from VAANI conducted a programme on sensitisation to deafness on 1st July 2009 for 300 students of Birla High School for Girls in Kolkata. The children enjoyed the session, especially their interaction with Jhooma Sircar, a young deaf adult who has a B.Ed degree and teaches deaf children.![]()

VAANI and CINI ASHA
VAANI’s training workshops with CINI-Asha have now entered the second phase.
Training for CINI Asha, Kolkata
VAANI conducted a training programme on Screening for Hearing Impairment for trainees from CINI Asha on Saturday, April 18 2009. The 23 participants from CINI-ASHA were from the urban slums in the Bibi Bagan and Tara Para areas of Kolkata. The programme aimed at providing these trainees with basic skills to screen and identify deaf children from the age of 2 years.

On VAANI’s initiative, a trained teacher of the deaf, conducted a training programme on communication and sign language for teachers in an NGO in Kolkata.
Art Walk for VAANI
VAANI, Deaf Children’s Foundation is proud to announce its association with The Oberoi Grand Kolkata and artist Keshav Roy in hosting the ‘Art Walk’.
Workshop with Sue Lewis

VAANI organised 2 workshops on pre-primary and primary education from 10th to 13th February for parents and teachers of deaf children. The workshop was conducted by Sue Lewis, a teacher of the deaf who was on the faculty of Oxford University and Manchester University.
Muktadhara - Fact finding visit
The VAANI team visited Muktadhara, an organisation working with disabilities in the Hooghly District of West Bengal.

In celebration of World Deaf Week, VAANI, Deaf Children’s Foundation team visited schools and addressed the students.
Training Workshops in Gujarat
Two-day work shops were held in October for teachers from different institutes in Gujarat on the use of the teaching and learning kits designed and produced by Umang School, Ahmedabad in collaboration with VAANI.
