Workshop in Meghalaya

Parents at programme

A workshop on emotional and social needs of deaf children and their families was conducted on April 8, 2010 for family members at the School and Centre for Hearing Handicapped Children (SCHHC) in Shillong, Meghalaya. 38 family members of children who attend SCHHC participated in this programme

Some of the problems faced by parents like the anxiety about the second child being deaf and lack of community awareness were discussed.

It was an eye opener for parents, grandparents and siblings of deaf children who learnt more about their deaf child and also got to understand the teachers of their deaf child. A bridge has to be built between the teachers and the parents to have any kind of success for deaf children and it is important for parents and teachers to first understand each other.

Towards the end of the programme one parent stood up and said,  “Whatever we have learnt and gained from this programme should not be left behind. We should take these learnings to our homes and practice it with our children.”
