Projects in Gujarat

VAANI has been supporting a project by Umang Education & Research Centre for the Hearing Impaired, Ahmedabad to develop a teaching and learning material kit to assist in language acquisition for deaf children.

Umang kit

The kit contains teaching aids, instruction material and a manual for teachers, parents and professionals who teach deaf children. VAANI is involved in training parents and professionals in the use of these kits.

VAANI also has a technical partnership with SSG Badhir Vidyavihar in Nadiad, providing technical input to teachers of the school and the parents.

The Rotarians of Nadiad started SSGB Vidyavihar in 1976 with only 6 children. This residential school with 25 trained teachers provides free services to over 310 deaf children from 12 districts of Gujarat. The school also runs a parent training programme, in which the parent is trained along with the child. The school practises total communication, using a combination of speech, signs, visual aids, the written word and lip reading. The Centre gives a handbook of common sign language to all the parents to follow at home. They have a number of vocational training activities, like computer training, tailoring, carpentry, fabrication and printing press etc.
