VAANI and Umang

VAANI has been supporting a project by Umang Education & Research Centre for the Hearing Impaired, Ahmedabad to develop a kit of teaching and learning material to assist in language acquisition for deaf children. The kit contains teaching aids, instruction material and a manual for teachers, parents and professionals who teach deaf children. VAANI is involved in training parents and professionals in the use of these kits.

Umang Education and Research Centre for the Hearing Impaired is a school that provides free services to around 75 deaf children through its day programme and resource centre. The Umang Trust is a not-for-profit, secular charitable trust recognised by the Ministry for Social Empowerment and Justice.

Project Activities:
•  To increase effective early communication between deaf children and their parents to nurture bonding, resulting in emotional and social stability of the deaf child.
•  To enhance language, reading and writing skills, enabling deaf children to cope better in school, especially as they advance to higher education.
•  To make professionals, parents and CBR workers more competent and confident of working with deaf children at home and at school.
