VAANI’s work in Karnataka focuses on reaching deaf children and their families in rural areas and urban slums. Consultations with the State Government, NGOs and families highlighted needs around the identification of deaf children in rural and urban areas and the support available to families to help their children access communication and language.

VAANI works with cross-disability and information-providing organisations to meet some of these needs.VAANI has formal partnerships in Karnataka with Association of People with Disability and Samuha Samarthya.

Apart from formal partnerships, VAANI is involved in other activities in the State in collaboration with local organisations.

Department for Welfare of Disabled (DWD) - The DWD is responsible for running four schools for the deaf in the state of Karnataka. The Department has realised the need to increase the focus on quality of education in these schools and has requested VAANI to help in training and capacity building of the staff.

Helen Keller School, Tumkur - VAANI has identified Mrs. Gayatri Raveesh, the founder principal of Helen Keller School,as an ideal resource person for training and capacity building programmes in Karnataka. Mrs. Raveesh is the mother of a deaf son. She now plans to motivate more parents and encourage them to come together and form support groups.

B.D. Tatti Memorial for Deaf Children, Gadag - VAANI and B.D. Tatti Memorial are technical partners wherein VAANI acts as the resource organisation for B.D. Tatti Memorial and provides training and capacity building for the staff of their pre-primary and primary sections.

Dr. S.R. Chandrashekar Institute of Speech and Hearing, Bangalore - VAANI, in partnership with Dr. S.R. Chandrashekar Institute of Speech and Hearing, plans on opening an Information Kiosk that will disseminate information to parents of deaf children. The information will range from how to access government schemes to questions on education, training, emotional and social needs of deaf children etc. The kiosk will also distribute information material published by VAANI and Dr. S.R. Chandrashekar Institute of Speech and Hearing free of cost to the parents.
