VAANI works with very committed partners in Meghalaya to provide services to deaf children in North East India. We have also been working with family members of deaf children and professionals who work with deaf children to improve the quality of services currently available for deaf children.

VAANI is supporting a project through our partner organisation, Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre, to develop communication skills of the deaf children in the village to enable them to attend school. CBR workers of the village are also being trained so that they are able to cater to the needs of the deaf children and their families.

VAANI has been conducting fact-finding visits in the interior regions to assess the quality of services provided to deaf children and their families.

One such visit was to Masar, a village located in the hills of Meghalaya two and a half hours away from Barapani, where a clan by the surname ‘Nongsten’ inhabits one of the hillocks.
It was found that in every family of this particular group, there were one or more deaf persons. All the members of these families communicated very well using gestures and signs and also exhibited their skill in lipreading. It was also found that the women in the family were the carriers in all cases and that deafness in the newer generation is progressive.
