VAANI and SCHHC

The school and Centre for the Hearing Handicapped Children (SCHHC) is a unit of the Society for the Welfare of the Disabled (SWD). The SWD founding members comprised Shillong citizens, religious members and lay folk; business people and professionals. SWD is registered as a Society (Regd.No.SR/TSFTWOTD-255/90 of 1990).

The SCHHC is well equipped with Trained Special Educators, a Speech Therapist cum Audiologist and an ear mould Technician. In SCHHC, special education is imparted to the children with speech and hearing Impairment of various types and degrees through self-help skills such as language training, speech therapy, speech reading, and sign language. Efforts are being made to keep the parents of the children informed on ways and means of continuing the procedure being followed at school in the home. Apart from its main objective of educating the children, the school also aims at their rehabilitation and their integration in family and society through the teaching of functional communication skills. The school firmly believes that children with speech and hearing Impairment are not a liability but an asset for the society they live in.

Project with VAANI: Lack of parental cooperation is a hindrance for the development of the child. SCHHC want to empower the parents to bring better cooperation in uplifting children with Hearing Impairment.

Project Aims &  Objectives :-

  • To give empowerment to the 228 parents of CWHI.
  • To motivate and empower the special teachers
  • To create awareness to mainstream school teachers
  • To disseminate proper information.
  • To impart and exchange basic skills of communication with the parents of CWHI.
  • Capacity building of teachers /professionals.
