VAANI’s survey shows that there are not many services being provided for the deaf sector in Mizoram. Lack of awareness on the part of the community and parents and extended families of deaf children has yielded a deep sense of negative feelings towards deaf children. At the moment, Mizoram is lagging behind in realising the resources available to help these children grow through quality services as there has yet been no such initiative, both, from the part of the government or from any other social organization. The requirement for services in the State fits neatly into VAANI’s objective of working with childhood deafness. Based on the survey, VAANI has conducted sensitisation workshops for teachers and parents in Aizawl. The participants were chiefly teachers who are trained in different disabilities, and parents of children who attend the Spastic Society. VAANI’s strategy for future work in Mizoram is to work through the following two partner organisations in all the eight districts of Mizoram: • Spastic Society of Mizoram • Ferrando Integrated Women Development Center: Peace Home
