Case Story - Yallamma

Yallamma is one of the little girls supported by VAANI’s partnership projects.

Yallamma, daughter of Siddappa Huded, was born on 1 July 1994.  She is speech and hearing impaired, most probably due to her parents being close relations.  She was diagnosed only when she was 2 years old.  She lives with her parents and two brothers.  She is an active and healthy child and enjoys playing with her siblings. She had no skills as her parents were un-educated and had no access to any information.

Now, since joining the CBR programme, she is able to pronounce 15 words of two alphabets. She goes to school everyday and is studying in the second standard.  The child is quick and bright and with the right amount of training, should have no problem adjusting to a regular school’s routine.  However, for this, her parents will need to be motivated and provided with some training. She mainly communicates using sign and body language.  The worry is of how she will manage in higher classes if she does not receive specialised training.  She has been fitted with a hearing aid, but does not like using it much.  She loves helping her mother with the house-work.
