In our work across the country over the last 12 years, we have found a gap in the area of volunteerism and in the perception of non-profit organisations. Most volunteer programmes involve activities that last a few hours and don’t really give the participant a holistic view of the work that the NGO does or the development sector as a whole. Moreover, since our work with deaf children and their parents is technical, most volunteers are not qualified to carry out those activities.
To address these gaps in Vaani, we have launched a holistic volunteer programme called Teach for Deaf. It is a 54 hour course spread over 9 months and is aimed at the corporate sector. The idea is to create a movement of leaders that collectively help solve the problem of inequalities in access of communication and language to deaf children.
Our programme involves
– Understanding the development sector
– Understanding community mobilisation
– Understanding compliance for nonprofits
– Training sessions with our senior Teachers of the Deaf
– Teaching deaf children and their parents
This programme is designed to give the participant and immersive volunteering experience and a series of value additions that include knowledge of the sector and CSR policies and its importance today, grassroots community engagement, and new perspectives on communication skills.
For us, this is a means of spreading awareness effectively and engaging with our audience in an enriching manner. It also adds to our transparency as an organisation and helps us strengthen our relationship with our donors.
