Deafness is often referred to as the 'invisible disability,' leaving many deaf children isolated within hearing families who may not fully understand their needs.
VAANIDeaf Children’s Foundation was founded to address this gap, inspired by a 2002 national study that revealed the lack of family involvement in the education and upbringing of deaf children in India. The study emphasized the need for awareness, early intervention, and communication support for these children. Over the past 19 years, VAANI has worked to empower families, advocate for the rights of deaf children, and create lasting change through early identification, education, and community engagement. We have reached over 100,000 beneficiaries across India, including deaf children, their families, and professionals, working together to ensure a brighter future for the hearing-impaired community.
Your donation to VAANI Deaf Children's Foundation will help us reach more deaf children and families across India. With your help, we can deliver customized educational intervention programs tailored to the unique learning needs of deaf children, enabling them to thrive academically and socially. Your support will fund early identification of hearing loss in newborns, skill-building initiatives that prepare deaf children for higher education and job opportunities, and comprehensive training for parents, teachers, and community professionals. Additionally, your contribution will enable us to provide nutritional supplements, outreach to underserved communities, and emotional and educational support for families, fostering a holistic approach to empowering deaf children. Every contribution enables us to expand our reach, empowering deaf children to overcome barriers, access quality education, and lead independent, fulfilling lives.
Advocating for the right of every deaf child to a complete life of respect and dignity.

By reaching hearing affected children residing in rural landscape and in isolated corners of India, VAANI Deaf Children’s Foundation is imparting an extremely essential social service. The sincerity and creativity of their work is felt by everybody because of the transparency in their approach. The way they have adopted to COVID19 restrictions by immediately turning to online mode shows their never give up attitude. I am extremely happy the way they strive to keep the donor in the loop. VAANI Deaf Children's Foundation continues to grow and develop at not just an amazing pace but also in a meaningful manner to bring support to children with hearing loss that has a trickle down effect on their families and their communities. One of the unique features of the organisation is that there is little investment in structures having made a conscious decision not be centre based but to focused more on community based interventions which facilitates involvement of the immediate families of the children, the extended families and more importantly the local communities. This adds to the visibility of the children rather than being hidden away from the public eye. Their acceptance in society and social events increases which in turn and leads to their integration in their community where they are seen as 'normal' and 'regular' members that can contribute to their development of their society.
Over the last 10 years since its establishment, VAANI has reached out to over 3000 children and 8000 family members. Institutional based services would have had a far more limited impact. More importantly, their organisation has a far more holistic approach to its services and treating the parents as key partners in the management of their children's disability. Along with training for professionals, the parents have undergone several training programmes to give them the support and skills they need to manage their child's hearing loss, and meeting other parents of deaf children. This provides them with a common space to network with each other, share their joy and pain, and learn from each other. VAANI was born in Kolkata with services in West Bengal but expanded to the some of the states of North East India, but now has partners in various corners of the country which is very remarkable for an organisation still in its childhood. Senior staff are also actively involved in national level policy issues, acting as the 'voice' of the deaf community to ensure that their rights to basic and other needs are addressed.
As a development consultant who has many years of working with disadvantaged communities, I have a great deal of respect for the organisation, its vision and mission, and its rapid growth. I wish them all luck in their work
