Education

The Educational Intervention Program is segmented into four key stages: Foundational Years, Elementary Years, Secondary Years, and Higher Education. Each stage is meticulously designed to address the specific needs of children with hearing impairment, ensuring their development and integration into mainstream society.

VAANI Deaf Children’s Foundation’s Educational Program aligns seamlessly with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasizing foundational literacy, elementary, secondary, and higher education.

By harmonizing its initiatives with NEP 2020, VAANI underscores its commitment to delivering inclusive, equitable, and quality education across all stages, empowering hearing-impaired individuals to realize their full potential.

The program typically involves a range of services, including

Diagnosis and assessment

The program provides screening and diagnostic services to identify hearing loss in children as early as possible. This helps ensure that children receive the necessary support and resources at an early stage to help them develop communication and language skills.

Early intervention services

The program provides a range of early intervention services to support the development of communication and language skills in hearing- impaired children. This may include speech therapy, hearing aids, and parent training.

Education support

The program provides educational support to children with hearing loss, including access to special education services and resources to help them succeed in school and cope with school curriculum.

Support for families

The program also provides support to families of hearing-impaired children, helping them to understand their child's needs and develop strategies for communication and language development.

VAANI's Educational Intervention Program follows a dual approach to cater to the unique needs of deaf children

Direct Intervention Model

In this model, VAANI’s community mobilizers conduct groundwork to identify deaf children and families in need. Then VAANI establishes Sadhan Educational Centres where children and parents can access free, individualised and group educational programs.

These centres offer specialised learning support designed to help children cope with school curricula while providing parents with crucial training and emotional support. The goal is to create a resource-rich environment that enhances both academic and personal development for the children.

Enabler Model

VAANI collaborates with existing organizations that already have infrastructure in place.

VAANI provides them with the technical skills, standardized curriculum, and support necessary to work effectively with deaf children. This enables these organizations to improve their educational interventions, ensuring deaf children can successfully navigate their school education.

A key component of our Educational Intervention Program is assessing the child’s current level of functioning. Based on the assessment results, we set long-term and short-term goals and plan specific activities and teaching strategies to achieve these targets. Our special educators create an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) tailored to each deaf child’s unique needs, ensuring a customized approach to their development and learning journey.

Our approach to teaching deaf children follows a combined total communication method, which incorporates various techniques to facilitate learning. This method focuses on visual communication, auditory skills, speech reading, tactile-visual cues, gestures, and other strategies based on the child’s preferences, learning needs, and home environment.

By tailoring the communication approach to each child and family, we aim to optimize educational outcomes and ensure effective engagement and holistic development of the child.
